  1. Team leaders/Appointed person to be responsible for positioning crane on quay.

     

  2. Operatives must be aware of trips and fall hazards at all times especially in live working areas, in particular the placement of cargo; i.e. Kickers, Slings, Lifting gear etc.

     

  3. All lifting equipment must be certified and tested to relevant safety regulations.

     

  4. All operatives to take instruction from Appointed Person or Nominee.

     

  5. All Dunnage MUST be replaced or removed while lift is stationary.

     

  6. Lifting gear MUST be placed in a manner, which clears any snags or protrusions on lift.

     

  7. Guide ropes MUST be attached to each lift.

     

  8. When lift is in motion be aware of any loose dunnage or fittings.

     

  9. Forklift truck with cage to be used to raise operative to appropriate height to remove lifting gear.

  1. When removing lifting gear, be aware of movement of slings and shackles.

     

  2. Adjustments MUST NOT be made while lift is in progress.

     

  3. All personnel to stand well clear of loads when being lifted by crane.

     

  4. All lifting equipment to be used in accordance with Lift Plan.

     

  5. Only visitors wearing Safety Helmets and High Visibility Vests will be allowed to enter operational areas.

     

  6. Operatives must be aware of trips and fall hazards at all times especially in live working areas, in particular the placement of cargo; i.e. Kickers, Slings, Lifting gear etc.

     

  7. Communication must be 2 way between Appointed Person / Crane Driver or Nominee / Crane Driver.

     

  8. Air horns – if activated all operations must stop and must be investigated.

  1. Cranes to not exceed a maximum radius of 30 metres.

     

  2. Authorised person to ensure hoist ropes are vertical and avoid twisting at all times.

     

  3. Authorised person to be in radio contact with both crane drivers.

     

  4. Crane drivers to be in contact with each other to help synchronisation.

     

  5. Operatives must be aware of trips and fall hazards at all times especially in live working areas, in particular the placement of cargo; i.e. Kickers, Slings, Lifting gear etc.

     

  6. Communication must be 2 way between Appointed Person / Crane Driver or Nominee / Crane Driver.

     

  7. All lifting equipment must be certified and tested to relevant safety regulations.

     

  8. Air horns – if activated all operations must stop and must be investigated.

    1. Operator must have the Appropriate Licences/qualification for the crane(s) they are operating.

  1. Operators must be medically fit for work with 12 monthly occupational health visits.

     

  2. Drug and alcohol testing is available where mangers suspect that an employee is unfit through drug or alcohol use.

     

  3. Do not carry unauthorised personnel when operating crane(s).

  4. Do not use personal devices such as headphones, satellite navigation devices, mobile phones etc.

  5. Crane(s) to be operated with care and avoid any rapid control actions.

  6. Where applicable the key must be removed crane(s) secured and keys handed to a team leader.

  7. Crane(s) to be operated only by authorised persons for authorised tasks.Full PPE should be worn when access and egressing crane(s) where the site rules have identified this as a requirement.

  1. A pre-use check should be undertaken before use. The pre-use check should be based on the information provided by the manufacturer.

  2. Defects should be reported immediately and the vehicle removed from use until such time as deemed fit for use by a competent person.

  3. Servicing and planned preventative maintenance will be carried out in line with operational manual (periodically/mileage accrued).

  4. Only use machinery in the environment it is designed to be used for.

  5. Only use the equipment for its intended use.

  6. Do not override any safety devices

  7. The operational manual must be available.

a) Thorough examination will be carried out at the following frequencies; 6 months, for lifting equipment and any associated accessories used to lift people, 6 months, for all lifting accessories and 12 months for all other lifting equipment.

  1. Thorough examination will be carried out following exceptional circumstances’, e.g. if it is damaged or fails, is out of use for long periods, or if there is a major change in how it is used which is likely to affect its integrity.

  2. Safe Working Load shall be displayed on the equipment.

  3. Safe Working Load must never be exceeded

  4. Never use unsuitable equipment, e.g. makeshift, damaged, badly worn chains, shortened with knots, kinked or twisted wire ropes, frayed or rotted fibre ropes.

  5. Loads must never be lifted over people.
