Key Hazards

Risks

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Lifting equipment failure

  • Lifting accessories failure.

  1. Entrapment of limbs.

  2. Crushing injuries.

  3. Death.

  4. Impact injuries.

 

 

Do

  • Inspect the slings prior to and after use:

    • Damaged or cut outer cover.

    • Damaged stitching.

    • Exposed inner core.

    • Heat damage (if due to friction then this will appear as a hard, shiny area on the surface).

    • Chemical damage.

    • Solar degradation.

    • Illegible markings.

  • Keep labels away from hooks and fittings.

  • Use packing to protect the sling from sharp edges.

  • Ensure the sling has adequate lifting capacity (SWL) for the job in hand.

  • Quarantine the gear if there are any doubts of its suitability for use.

  • Store lifting equipment in the correct manner.

  • Report any defects to a team leader.

Do Not

Cross or twist the sling or overcrowd fittings.

Force or wedge slings onto fittings.

Lift from the point of any hook.

Attempt to shorten, knot or tie slings.

Use lifting Equipment/Accessories to tow or drag loads.

Expose round slings to direct heat or flames.

Use lifting equipment /accessories with cut or damaged outer covers.

Exceed the SWL.

Use any Lifting Equipment / accessories that has been deemed damaged or worn without discussion of Team Leader.

Use any lifting equipment /Accessories that have not been inspected under the LOLLER regulations ( 6 months for equipment used to carry lift people )
